Defining Destiny

April 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Destiny. A relevant topic, considering the name of this site is “destinybuilding.com” and the blog’s theme is Creating Your Destiny. So let’s jump right in and have a look, shall we?

What ideas does the word destiny conjure up in your mind? If you scour the web, you will find there are a surprising variety of ways to define the word, ranging from accepting “one’s lot in life,” to the equally disempowering “predetermined course of events beyond human power or control”, and “fore-ordained by the Divine will”. Since I have the privilege of writing the posts on this site, and since I am doing so with the end goal of assisting each reader in improving the quality of their lives and manifesting their destiny, my focus is on the definition I believe in my heart to be the most helpful. Accordingly, the words I chose below are of my own creation:

Destiny: The sum result of the choices that people make, knowingly or otherwise, that determines their outcome(s) in life.

Three things I personally believe about destiny are:

1) it is not preordained,

2) it is continually being redefined in moment by moment decisions, and

3) with the freedom to choose comes responsibility.

Not Preordained

I strongly believe that we are the creators of our own destinies and that our choices ultimately come to define us. To believe otherwise is to take our hands off of the wheel, so to speak, and give control of our lives over to random forces. If that was the case I would be wasting as much time writing these words as you would be in reading them.

Moment by Moment Decisions

Destinies are created in each decision we make. Our ultimate outcomes in life are the sum total of all the decisions that we have made over time. Each choice shuts off one avenue of possibility while opening a myriad of others. While each choice we make isn’t necessarily written in stone and can be usually be reconsidered, the exact path we take to our ultimate destination becomes forever altered in each moment of choice and affects the ultimate road we take to arrive at our destination. There are literally 100′s of ways to drive from Orlando, FL to Seattle, WA for example, but the roads we take, the people we encounter, and the experiences we have along the way will differ dramatically depending when and where we choose to make our turns.

Freedom, with Responsibility

Possessing the gift of choosing our own destiny is a tremendous power. In each of the choices we make, we exert our influence on the world around us. Life doesn’t happen to us, we choose and create all of our circumstances. And if you believe as I do, regardless of your religion, that we all share a common spiritual bond, that we all connected together as part of one Universal source, it behooves us to consider what effects on the rest of humanity our choices and decisions will have. Selfishness disappears and is replaced by selflessness as we begin to comprehend that we are all part of one interconnected whole, and that one part of the body cannot prosper at the expense of another without the injuring the whole.
